Robert Winter (and colleagues) has looked at how the next generation GPS's could work on devises such as the iPhone 3G. And it has a number of nice features to it.
First is the software to pick up the addresses. You can either take a picture of an address on printed material, and it will automatically convert that into a GPS coordinate, or you could get it directly from a website (much like Skype is reading phone numbers).
Now comes the really cool part. Instead of showing a map with the GPS coordinates, it will superimpose the route on top of the live video feed, which is being streamed into your iPhone via the built in camera.
It also captures any street signs it may encounter much like the new technology in Opel cars.

Ali, it is just a concept. The iPhone's CPU is currently not fast enough to overlay graphics over live video. But my guess is that iPhone 3G 2.0 might be....

Amazing if it can be done.
That would kill the learning curve for all sorts of navigators, since you can see the yellow arrow in direct relation to how the roads really look.
